Top Five Feature Trees

Highlight your landscaping with a beautiful and stand out feature tree.

The garden surrounding your house can enrich your property while providing a sanctuary for you to enjoy. Within these gardens, there are often spaces where a feature tree would be perfect. As the name suggests, the feature tree will be a focal point, designed to draw attention and to encompass and enhance the surrounding landscaping.

Here are our top 5 feature trees.

1.     Weeping Maple (Acer Palmatum Disectum)

A beautiful tree, with delicate green foliage that offers brilliant red colouring during the Autumn months. They are deciduous, meaning that during the winter months they will drop their leaves, allowing light to penetrate through into the garden. They require little maintenance and have slow growth, making them ideal for smaller garden areas. The nature of weeping maples means that the spread of their branches is likely to grow faster than their height and therefore you should choose a maple that is close to the desired height you want to achieve within your garden. The weeping branches can be pruned to achieve the look you are after. The Weeping Maple will thrive in free draining soil and a sunny spot. Similarly, they can also grow in semi shaded areas.

    2.       Magnolia Grandiflora Teddy Bear

The Magnolia Teddy Bear is a popular feature tree within Australia. Their dark green leaves command attention, while their big bold white flowers stand out and provide a sweet smell. The Magnolia Teddy Bears have a conical shape which helps to draw attention, while remaining within the desired space. Their foliage is dense and consistent, making them ideal to block out unwanted views.  It is an evergreen tree, so you will always have its coverage. The Magnolia Teddy Bear will grow in semi shade to full sun areas and can grow up to 4m.

3.        Camellia Sasanqua

The Camellia Sasanqua is a beautiful plant that will flourish at any height from 1.5 to 2.5 metres tall. Camellias can be shaped and will provide a highlight plant that can illuminate your garden. Evergreen, the Camellia Sasanqua flowers in Autumn providing a natural beauty as the weather cools. Available with a vast range of flower styles and colours, you can elect the flowers of your preference. The camellia sasanqua grows well in part to full sun. Should you have a shady garden, its cousin, the Camellia Japonica is an ideal alternative liking full to semi shade areas. See which Camellia is best for your garden

4.    Magnolia Grandiflora Little Gem

Similar to the Magnolia Teddy Bear, these trees have a similar leaf and flower. The main difference is that the Magnolia Little Gem will grow more like a typical tree where the branches will extend in varying directions, lengths and their shape is not typical. The ones pictured have been shaped to look more uniform. They offer greater opportunity to mould (through pruning) the tree to your desired look.  They can grow up to 4.5 – 6m depending on their conditions and prefer full sun to semi shade.

5.     Snow Pears (Pyrus nivalis)

The snow pear has a light green leaf with small white flowers. When in flower, there are many flowers, making it a beautiful sight. It is an ornamental pear which limits its size and makes it ideal for compact spaces. They are deciduous and will provide a round tree like shape. Growing to heights of around 5m tall the Snow Pear prefers full sun.
